4/19 Interview with Caroline: Today I had a wonderful interview with Caroline. She just moved to UCLA this past week and it was great to hear all about how her first week has been and about her very welcoming roommates. We talked a bit about how it felt/feels being out of state during the rush process but she reassured me that the bond will still grow no matter what. We also had the chance to talk about how her pledge process was and she gave me some advice/tips on emails because she was awarded the best emails in her pledge class! We realized we had a lot in common as the conversation went on. Then we discussed our experience with USAC internships this past quarter and were able to talk about the campaigns we were working on. Overall, my interview with Caroline was a very enjoyable conversation and I look forward to talking to her again soon.

4/19: Interview with Ishan
Today I had an interesting conversation with Ishan! I learnt that the Florida reptile situation is just as bad as portrayed online and that there is actually an infestation of Iguanas. I also found out that although Ishan is a fan of horror movies, he prefers movies that make him think so more like psychological thrillers like Midsommar. We also briefly spoke about football, and I found out about the football (a.k.a. soccer) world tea. Now I actually have some knowledge of football so as to not embarrass myself when the inevitable football conversation arises. We also spoke about music for a bit, and I found out although Ishan hasn't been to many concerts, that in the summer after Freshman year he went to a Playboi Carti concert. It was really great to get to know Ishan better!

4/19: Interview with Lillan
Today I had the wonderful opportunity to speak with Lillan! We spoke about a lot of different things and started the conversation off with her journey towards wanting to be an IP lawyer. We then spoke a lot about being women in STEM but wanting to possibly go into law. It was really interesting to hear about some of her experiences as an Electrical Engineering major. She was saying that actually in one of her classes only 4 out of the 80 students were women. She was also saying that it has been really difficult to make friends within her major and that she wishes that she had more. We then spoke a lot about misogyny and about being treated differently (e.g. mansplaining). It was interesting that whilst I had not really experienced misogyny in an academic setting in high school and rather experienced it upon coming to college, Lillan had not really dealt with it in her major (even the majority of people in her major are guys). She said that she experienced it more upon acceptance into college in high school. I really enjoyed this conversation and the time flew by.

4/19 Interview with Ricky: My interview with Ricky was great and I learned so many things about him. Ricky told me that his interest in Immigration Law stems from his personal experience of moving around so much. Being born in China, moving to Singapore, then to Canada, and finally to the US he experienced first hand the struggles and barriers that often come with immigration. He wants to help other families that face similar challenges thus his interest in immigration law. His favorite moments in Kappa Alpha Pi thus far have been the big/little reveal and the day he crossed. His advice to his first week pledge self would be to stay on top of school work. He had to deal with COVID during the first week of pledge which definitely was a challenge. We both had a shared interest in the movie Soul and expressed shared sentiments on the experience of being out of state during this school year. He did move to WW and shared how exciting it was meeting people and seeing the campus for the first time.

Nathan Klassen 4/19 Interview with Caroline: Meeting with Caroline was very nice as she is also a first-year studying political science. I had the pleasure of being in the same class as her in the fall of this quarter, and it is good to know that she is still keeping up with her studies and that she has also added two minors. We talked about how staying at home, especially after already staying at home for 4 years for high school has been difficult, and how it prompted her decision to move to Westwood this spring. She was able to assure me that the pledge process was well worth it as she has now found a brotherhood within Kappa Alpha Pi, which has made her transition to Westwood smoother. We further discussed the prerequisites needed to declare political science as a major and we both will only need to take one more lower-division course. In doing so, we may be taking the same course in the fall, but we talked about how that is subject to change due to the enrollment times being skewed due to freshman orientation.

Nathan Klassen - 4/19 Interview with Caitlin: It was very exciting to meet with Caitlin, as my big revealed that they had a close relationship, so I knew I, too, would get along with her. We briefly discussed how I am going to be a part of the Empire family and how there is some divisiveness between Empire and Bitches, but in most matters, it plays no significant role. Caitlin graduated in the fall of this year, and after congratulating her, I was very appreciative of all the insight she has for someone still with years left to be on campus. She did a marvelous job of making me be excited to live in the dorms and eat at the amazing dining halls that UCLA provides. She was also able to talk about how she was able to graduate early even with adding a minor in Art History. I was very intrigued with this as my favorite class so far at UCLA has been an Art History class (AH25 – Museum Studies). She talked about how even though she graduated she is still a very active member of the fraternity by serving as the AVPR last quarter to the Alpha Nu class. It was great to hear all she had to say and her experience about getting a job at a law firm and where she hopes her path takes her. It almost felt like a mentor giving me all the advice she had to offer. Needless to say, it was a great interview.

4/19 Interview with Julia: My interview with Julia was really wonderful. Since we are both Public Affairs majors we talked about our favorite courses, professors, and she talked to me about classes she is taking as upper divisions that she is enjoying so far. We both liked how PA 70 was mostly writing assignments and contrary to popular opinion we both enjoyed PA 40 which is a microeconomics course within the major. Julia's advice she would give to herself during pledge week 1 would be to prioritize school and stay on top of work in general. She also advised me to always check in with myself and how I am doing mentally which was very kind. My favorite part of our conversation was talking about her family- which I hope to be a part of- with Ranhita as her big. She really enjoys the family time she has with her and Anita and it made me really excited about what the future could hold. I look forward to talking to and learning more from Julia this quarter.

4/19: Interview with Matthew
I had the awesome opportunity to talk to Matthew earlier this evening, and we had some random, but really insightful conversation that began with his experience in the Bruin Ambassador Program and how we have similar career interests to work in policy. Then, we had funny conversations about how I love babies and children and how he does not want any; lots of laughing. I ended up telling him all about the crazy stuff that has been going on with my family lately, but ended the conversation in a very wholesome way talking about how important and insightful it is to hear about people stories. We talked about how once we got closer to our pledge brothers, we saw them in a different light and not just from our first assumptions. He also took the same class, Psychiatry 79, that I am taking right now, so we talked about mental health and mindfulness. I am so excited to continue to have wonderful conversations like these with Matthew.

4/19: Interview with David
After I interviewed Matthew, I hopped on a call with David and we began to discuss how much we love food and watching cooking shows. Recently, David's been watching MasterChef, so I told him how for lunch I made this awesome honey garlic chicken. He then asked me how the pledge process was going for me, and how we only have 11 pledges. He also asked me about my classes, and I recommended one of my favorite Psychology classes that I've taken at UCLA, social psychology. We also bonded over the fact that we think religion is really cool and we learned a different perspective by both going to Catholic high school. All in all, we had quite insightful conversations and I can't wait to talk to him more!

Christian Schellhase Interview with Caroline Hsu Monday 4/19
I had a really nice conversation with Caroline. Started by talking about how we had both taken Classics classes, hers involving greek mythology and mine the origins of the English language. She shared a little about her pledge process as a Nu. We talked about our experience with USAC programs, Caroline with the Internal VP office, and I with the External VP. We moved on to talking a little bit about Vegas and Henderson where I have some family. She somehow knew about a condo building I was talking about, which was surprisingly impressive. Eventually, we ended up talking about Boodle fights from Filipino culture, which in simple terms is an eating competition. I had actually never heard of the term before, so it was cool to learn about. Caroline overall was super cool and I really hope I can talk with her again soon!

Christian Schellhase Interview with Alejandro Salas-Villa Monday 4/19
My interview with Alejandro was actually a really reassuring experience. We talked a lot about his journey to wanting to work in public policy. I have personally recently struggled with whether I still want to go into law, so it was nice to have someone else tell me that it was ok to not know what I wanted to do yet. I feel like I tell myself that a lot, but it is still uplifting to hear it from someone else. Alejandro gave great advice on programs for pre-law students, the UCLA Law Fellows Program in particular. It sounded like a really amazing way to get prepared for law school and to confirm that law school is the path I want to pursue. We also talked about double majoring and the Public Affairs major in particular. I definitely want to at least take public affairs classes and potentially look at adding it to my degree in some way. Alejandro also gave a great tip about using Zotero. Also touched on the UCDC program and the application process for it. A really great and uplifting conversation overall for me!

4/19: Interview with Megan Hoang
I had the pleasure of talking to Megan. Megan was super nice and easy to talk to. We spent a lot of the interview talking about high school mock trial. She had heard of my school and we thought we might've gone against each other in high school. Not only that, but she migh'tve crossed me when I was a witness in the state competition. We also talked about how Megan recently switched from an Economics major to a Public Affairs major. This was especially interesting to me because I am currently a business economics major, and have been debating if this major is the right fit for me. After talking to Ria and Megan, I am interested in checking out the public affairs major. Overall, which just talked about our struggles with keeping up with school, and complained about Economics. I hope I can talk to her again soon!

4/20: Fifth Interview (with Chanel): Today, I had my last interview of the week with Chanel! It was so fun getting to know Chanel, especially because her and I are the same year and same major. I think we bonded the most over three things: being an only child, our high school cultures, and BMUN. We both are only children, and had to suffer with endless imaginary friends as kids. When we become parents, we want to have tons of kids so they always have each other! She attended Huntington Beach High School, and I went to Palos Verdes High School; both nurture very conservative atmospheres that, oftentimes, is really difficult for self-growth. We agreed that the people in our respective areas were always close-minded, and going to UCLA was such a breath of fresh air. When it comes to BMUN, her and I laughed over the fact that it was our very last time being in a massive group of people. BMUN took place March 5-8 of 2020 at UC Berkeley, and I think that is my last memory of hanging out with all my school friends. Overall, I had a wonderful interview with Chanel. I'm so happy to have talked with her!

Hanna Sato - Interview with Maxine Dalton 4/20:
This morning I had a great conversation with Maxine about our shared passion for skiing We discussed our experiences with being a part of ski team for several years. Maxine attended a high school specifically for sports and participated in a racing team while I was a part of my resort's Big Mountain team (essentially backcountry terrain and tree skiing). Not only were we both a part of a ski team, we both have worked as volunteer ski instructors, helping individuals with disabilities learn to ski. I really enjoyed talking about our similar experiences, as both of us have found that not many people are as avid skiers as we are. She encouraged me to join UCLA's skiing and snowboarding team to find more people who love snow sports as we do which I will definitely look into. Overall, we had a very fluid and enjoyable conversation. I loved that we had so many things in common and really hope I am able to cross into Kappa Alpha Pi so I can ski with Maxine in the future!

Suzy Kadir - Interview 4/20
Today I was excited to talk to Suzy. We talked about her experience on UCLA's Mock Trial Team. I thought it was interesting that she tried out without any Mock experience, but she really enjoys it and said she made a lot of friends. She also talked about her role as a law clerk on the Judicial Board, and how this year she wanted to get more involved in law-related organizations. We thought it was cool that we shared the same birthday and hopefully plan to have a joint birthday if/when I cross. I also liked hearing about her tattoos and thought it was funny that she has a lip tattoo that says "Bitch", even though she isn't part of the Bitch Family. I liked hearing about the Persian sorority she's in, and she made me want to join an Asian organization. Overall, the time went by super quickly since Suzy was super cool and easy to talk to.
