4/15- interview with Chloe My interview with Chloe was very productive, and I feel like I learned much about her interests and responsibilities. She told me how she is an avid reader, and how she is a huge fan of fiction books along the lines of Catcher in the Rye. She also loves nonfictions, and she feels better about reading nonfiction books when she has schoolwork because it feels more productive. She is also very involved with UCLA Sexperts and UCLA radio, and her position as a Sexperts director allowed her to be featured on UCLA radio and eventually she secured a permanent spot. With regards to Kappa Alpha Pi and her career goals, she stated how she either wants to work in housing policy and help to end homelessness, or work as a lawyer for community organizations to advocate for social justice. In KAPi, she has gotten extremely close with her big, and frequently talks to her best friend’s (Julia) big. Overall, she was a pleasure to talk to, and I sincerely hope I have the opportunity to talk with her more in the future.

Nathan Klassen - 4/15 Interview with Akunnia: Today I had the pleasure of meeting with Akunnia. We had an extensive talk about school-related activities, such as political science requirements to declare the major, the process of picking up a minor, and different general education course recommendations. I am looking to prolong my stay at UCLA and one approach to do this is by obtaining a minor. Akunnia has two minors that I am interested in, so I am glad about her feedback with it. Additionally, she talked about how this spring quarter for her is fairly easy as she has one class, but she is also doing research and an internship so she is still staying busy! We progressed into different personal matters and stories, such as having siblings and familial stories, I learned that she has a twin and about one story when her family had a bit of a crisis while at the airport when trying to flee Nigeria during the Ebola epidemic. We finished with travel ambitions and different appeals to our hometowns.

4/16- interview with Connie
Connie was a very friendly and conversational person! I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation. We talked a lot about where we’re from and our different experiences before coming to Westwood. I thought it was super interesting to hear about Connie’s time in Hawaii last quarter, and her transition from living in Hawaii to living in Westwood. We also talked about how she got to know her pledge brothers, even though pledging was an entirely virtual process. She said how she and her pledge brothers would always zoom and facetime after meetings, doing anything they could to see each other’s faces. Also, they would always try to talk about KAPi unrelated topics, strengthening their bond beyond just the pledging process. When she moved to Westwood, one of the very first things she did was have a picnic with her brothers. Overall, I learned lots about Connie as a person, and I hope I get the pleasure of talking with her again soon.

Friday 4/16
I had the pleasure of talking to Ria today. Ria was so sweet and welcoming. We talked about her time on the Mock Trial team, and how college mock trial was different from high school mock. I am excited to see her more during Mock Trial workshops. She told me a lot about her Public Affairs major. This was interesting to hear about because previously I knew little about the major. I liked how this major seemed more policy-based and focused on marginalized communities. It is definitely a major I am interested in switching into. We talked about the different clubs she is in. She encouraged me to join clubs outside of my field of study, which I think is great advice. I enjoyed hearing about her experience tutoring since tutoring is something that I also do. I also enjoyed hearing about her time working at a fellowship for the California Democratic Party in the months leading up to the 2020 election. Overall, she was super kind and gave me great advice.

Christian Schellhase Interview with Akunnia Akubuilo Friday 4/16
I had an incredible conversation with Akunnia today. Akunnia brought so much energy to the conversation which made the time go by way too fast. We talked about our shared affinity for space movies, my love of Sharetea, our little brothers' tendency to be a little bratty, and our shared disdain for bureaucratic red tape. She let me know about the good dining halls on campus that I will definitely be going to when I start living on the hill. We talked about being unapologetic about movies we like, but neither of us understood how anyone could like Shyamalan's The Last Airbender. It was super fun talking with Akunnia and her energy is *immaculate*.

Christian Schellhase Interview with Caitlin Buckley Friday 4/16
Caitlin was an amazing person to interview. It was great talking with her about City Year and why on Earth she would choose to move to Boston. Talking about her UniCamp experience and how that fed her desire to explore litigating for children. I had no idea that we would talk for so long about her job as a recruiting assistant, but I just kept having more questions about her experiences at a large firm that has a variety of support positions. It was especially interesting hearing about her tips for resumes after reviewing so many. Talking about her transition from linguistics to art history was also really interesting (it was nice getting to vent about the IPA). Her recommendations about Political Science upper-division classes will definitely come in handy for the fall.

Today I had a really wonderful time getting to know Megan a bit better. Megan’s advice she would give to herself week 1 of pledge is to stay on top of homework- even when it appears optional and I will definitely keep this in mind throughout my pledge process. After talking about the courses we have taken in public affairs, we found out that we both were in the same cluster and talked about our experience as non-stem majors in a neuro-heavy class. It was great to talk about the seminars we are now taking and both agreed that it would be nice to be able to take a few of the seminars as they are in topics we find very interesting. Megan previously worked at a law firm that specializes in marriage and family law and shared what that experience entailed. Finally, she shared some of the highlights of her pledge quarter and mentioned how every moment she spent with her pledge class was a highlight and with the process so far- I would have to agree .

Nathan Klassen - 4/16 Interview with Alejandro: I was very happy to meet with Alejandro. Despite meeting for the first time, our interview was hardly awkward as we were able to keep the conversation flowing without the need to revert to any of my typical “get to know you” questions. One topic we discussed was how he is not actively pursuing a career in law anymore. He had participated in the UCLA Law Fellows Program and decided that it is not the path for him. I was glad he gave some insight about this, as being very young it is hard to determine what you want to do for your career, and I have had some second thoughts about going to law school myself. Yet, Alejandro still enjoys the brotherhood aspect of the fraternity, which is reassuring if I end up crossing, but decide against going to law school. It was also good to hear that some of the education received from pledging (like writing emails with different fun facts that connect you to that particular person) has set him apart from other applicants, securing interviews for different job opportunities.

4/17:
Today I was excited to get to know Journey better. Journey was super cool and easy to talk to. She talked about her experience as a philosophy major, and the main reason she chose this major was that she took a dual-enrollment philosophy class and thought the teacher was cool. Overall, she likes the philosophy major as a whole but dislikes some of the classes and professors. She is also a Spanish minor and talked about the class she is taking now, which is more of a Spanish literature class. We also talked about her experience working for Chick-fil-A. She recalls it being overwhelming and stressful, but she did have a lot of good memories with the people there. Something interesting about Journey was that she was on the UCLA Yell Crew her first year. She quit because it was pretty tiring and she did not have a fun experience when she had to be the mascot, Josie Bruin. Finally, we talked about our shared love of sushi and she recommended a place called Shibuya Sushi in Calabasas.

04/17:
Today I had the wonderful opportunity to speak with Jennifer! It was so nice to be able to talk to her for longer. I learned that she received her second dose of the vaccine yesterday, and I felt bad because she did not feel that well but still showed up! We talked about a lot of random things, including her possible trip to France in the fall. We spoke a lot about friendships, and I learned that Jennifer, like me, appreciates friendships of all forms, whether they be for 2 weeks or a lifetime. I learned that Jennifer is very chill, yet very outgoing and can strike up conversations with pretty much anyone. It was funny because she was telling me about how one of her first friends at UCLA was actually a guy from the UK. We spoke about the difference in perspectives on people and friendships, and how a little weirdness is much better than none at all. I also learned that Jennifer would only have children if she could have a surrogate mother (and I tend to agree), yet that this is not really an option considering the financial aspect.

4/17 (first interview): My very first interview was with Jennifer, and it was so incredibly nice to meet with her. I was really nervous to interview the actives, because I was worried they would scare me with (constructive) criticism about the work I have done during pledge; but talking to Jennifer was a breath of fresh air. Unfortunately, she was feeling unwell due to her second dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, so I am very grateful for her providing me an interview nonetheless. We talked about a range of things, beginning with some familial traditions we've done since childhood. I learned that she loves to learn languages, and is proficient in not only Korean, but ASL and French. Not only that, but Jennifer has lived in so many places around the world, which I admire heavily. Not only that, but Jennifer is double majoring in Cognitive Science and Political Science so that she always has a wide range of subjects to learn about, which sounds like such a fun experience. The conversation was always light and casual, and comforting at times when she reassured me that my second year of college would be much better than the first. I confided in her that zoom university was a little cliquey when it came to the social scene, and she told me that real college is nothing like that. By the end, we were speaking about how interesting genetics are and how being able to have a child with your significant other is probably the greatest feeling in the world. To speak with someone as uplifting and kind as Jennifer for my first interview was truly a blessing, and I cannot wait to meet the rest of the actives.

4/17 Interview with Ranhita: My interview with Ranhita was a really wonderful time. Our conversation flew by and by the end, I had no idea that nearly an hour had gone by. Just like me, she and her sister have a 6 year age gap but she is the younger sister. We both talked about that age dynamic and how similar our sisters are in terms of creativity and personality. We then talked about her dog Scooter who she adores and how when we were both younger we put together PowerPoint presentations to convince our parents to let us get a dog. Ranita shared her experience working at Clarkson Law Firm which specializes in consumer protection. She shared really fascinating cases she worked on and overall what the job entails. My favorite part of our conversation was our shared sentiment about how important it is to take a philosophy course- with a quality professor- at one point in life in order to be grounded in what is important in life. Overall, I really enjoyed my time and hope I have the chance to learn more from her in the coming weeks.

4/17: Interview with Ira!
I loved talking to Ira and getting to know her interests better. She gave me some great recommendations on upper-division French classes, including a literature class on child soldiers in Africa and another on the history of Paris. I was struggling to figure out what classes to choose so it was great to hear how great these are! Ira also told me about her post-high school trip to Europe which sounded like a lot of fun. She also spoke about her experience moving around, and that how, unlike her sister, she doesn't have an attachment to material things because of it. It was really interesting to hear because I have a friend who similarly has moved around a lot and also does not have any particular attachment to material things due to the constant packing and selling cycle. I also learned that Ira lived in Sproul her sophomore year, and was accidentally on an all-girls floor! We also both agreed that for some reason Rendez would always be the place we'd run into the most random people. This was a really enjoyable conversation and I hope to speak to Ira again soon!
