Weekend Journal #2: drive.google.com/file/d/1vDJpLcq7po1Hbhcue-msP_PIEkK2e2LJ/view?usp=sharing Hello hello! This morning, Chloe, Eric, and I had such an amazing time this morning at Janss. We’ve been so excited to hang out in person, and I actually even ended up seeing Chloe at Chipotle last night! Chloe was the sweetest and made Eric and I tell her our Starbucks order and our favorite snacks from Trader Joe's and brought literally two bags full of stuff for us to feast on while having some wondrous conversation. As you can see in the picture, it was a lot of food and fruit and cheese. My lactose intolerance didn’t enjoy that last part, but I sure did. I also found out that Eric doesn’t like mangoes...which are my favorite fruit, so I guess more for me (haha)! One conversation we had that really stuck with me was that of gender and sexuality. We talked about how fluid both gender and sexuality are, and how closely people align the two when they’re such different things! I definitely want to read a book that Chloe recommended to us which I believe regards the unnecessary nature of the binary and what expectations it has created, not just in terms of sexuality and gender, but even just in being human. Everything is fluid! Chloe has always been someone I’ve looked up to in terms of confidence and having these kinds of conversations with people who are so open about it makes me feel so much more comfortable and confident in myself. I am just getting to know Chloe more and I already know that she’s going to be such a big supporter for both Eric and me. I even called her two days ago ranting about things that were stressing me out, and she’s the kindest and helpful. She’s also just so amazing at listening. Eric has also been the best and I really feel how much we all care for each other in the small while of knowing each other. We also had an interesting conversation about differing perspectives. It’s hard to have some conversations with people, but it’s also so beneficial to teach people and have them curious about topics they don’t know about. We talked about people coming from different areas and we learned about our individual lives and how we each grew up. I didn’t realize that Chloe was from like 10 minutes away from UCLA, so that’s so cool. I also showed Chloe my tattoos and hers are so! cute! Some people also came up to us and asked to watch their stand-up show, and we totally would’ve gone if we didn’t have to leave so soon for study hours! Oh! Something really fun that happened while we were out at Janss was that a prospective freshman came up to us while we were having our nice picnic and asked us why he should pick UCLA over USC. Honestly, we weren’t expecting it but all three of us just ended up talking about how much we love it here, and hearing them speak about their experiences here (through this interaction and further conversation) makes me gain so much perspective into Chloe and Eric as people. I love the way we can just bounce off of one another and it feels like I have known them for so much longer than I have. It’s amazing the sense of community and trust that Kappa Alpha Pi brings to us, and it really inspires me to see it blossoming in front of my eyes. I feel really loved in the environment of open communication, empathy, and laughter that Chloe immediately created for the three of us. I can’t wait for all the experiences and memories we are going to make together. I also can’t wait to meet all the other members of the Bitches family and make memories with them, as well.

Weekend Journal 4/25: Big/Lil Hangout Meeting with my big, Maxine– or she goes by Max, was really beneficial for multiple reasons. The main reasons are that we were able to become closer friends and she was able to give me some good advice. It is almost scary how much we found in common with each other. We found a similarity in something we have no control over, that being our birthdays. Our birthdays are each other's half birthdays (meaning we are exactly six months apart), which is an odd coincidence. Other things we were able to bond over included our political standpoints, family, some things that scare us, and music taste. We both have a similar political compass score, a typology of political opinions that analyzes where one stands about different beliefs regarding our government. Through this, we both like finding the middle ground of the very divisive and polarized political climate. We have fairly big hopes for the next cycle of political candidates and that they will encompass a wider range of diversity, and thus better represent the United States of America. Her dad and my brother both served in the Marine Corps. Since she is from the east coast, as her dad, he was sent to the training base called Parris Island, South Caroline; however, my brother was sent to Camp Pendleton, California. Despite this difference, they both were called to serve in Okinawa, Japan, which brought us together. Maxine shared one of the classes she took about oceanography and our fears of the unknown and the ferocity of waves in the deep ocean. Moving to other things we are scared of, neither of us really fancy insects, especially spiders or cockroaches. Max and I are in different areas making us not able to physically meet up, so we tried our best to simulate what a normal hangout would be. This was done by playing games on Zoom and I discovered that Max has an uncanny talent for guessing where my fleet is located in Battleship, she nearly got one right off the bat every time. During this, we also listened to music and found yet another commonality, our music taste. Doja Cat was our artist of the day and we enjoy her album Hot Pink. This wide-ranging conversation, including topics not written, served as a good reminder of the importance of a work and life balance. These discussions were able to take my mind off of all of the school work I needed to do and all other duties I have as a student. Max let me know that if I ever felt like school became overwhelming I could contact her and she would do her best to help me or have a conversation with me to take my mind off of things. Max was also able to console me during our meeting as well. This came as I had just gotten news of one of my pledge brother’s dropping, Christian. Not only was it sad to have him go, but also how my pledge class will receive more work to manage with him dropping. It is also sad how we had already experienced a fair amount of the process together, or at least to the point where we got our bearings, and how he will not complete it with us. We then delved into more of a profound talk about the subject of rejection and how some people did not get the chance of obtaining a bid. Us as UCLA, we students usually experience earning anything we attempt. This then goes into how we both have aspirations for going to law school and that it is a whole additional ordeal to get accepted into university again, needing us to revamp our resumes. I told her that my dream job is being a US Supreme Court Justice and she said she may have contact with someone who is trying to become a judge. We ended up talking for more than two hours and I cannot wait until we see each other again (hopefully in person). In addition, she is a great mentor and I hope to see our relationship flourish. Weekend Journal (4/25): Big/Lil Hangout! I was so excited to meet my big, David, and hanging out with him was better than I could have ever imagined. After such stressful few weeks, it was really refreshing to take a break with somebody so kind. I wasn’t certain what we were going to do today, so I was waiting in anticipation at my apartment. Maybe we’d get dinner? But what if the car ride is awkward? What if I mess up somehow and I lose my phone and we have to go on this really embarrassing hunt for it and then he thinks I’m this big weird clutz? I have really terrible social anxiety that has only gotten worse over quarantine, and part of me felt like I was burdening David with the way I can act in person. When I first meet people, I get really distanced a lot of the time in an effort not to say something stupid. Even when I really want to become friends with somebody, my anxiety can take over and make me feel like I’m the most annoying and hateful person in the world. The feeling is debilitating, and I didn’t want to do that to my big. I had a lot of worries going through my head before I saw him, but they dissipated immediately after I got in his car. The second I met David, I knew that everything would be alright! He was so upbeat and outgoing, that it filled all the patches of conversation that I felt like I was lacking in. It made me feel so comforted, and I really felt like he wanted to make me feel good and safe. Right off the bat, the vibes were really great. Our first destination was to a thrift store in Brentwood! I haven’t gone thrifting in a really long time, and being able to shop with him was so fun. I think being able to discover someone’s taste in clothing is really sweet, and I liked being able to find clothes with him. He found this one striped button-up that looked great on him, and I’m so glad he got it! I bought a leather skirt and three shirts, and I later found out the leather skirt did NOT fit…at all. But that’s okay. The journey of finding things at thrift stores is the best part! We decided to go to another thrift store, until they kicked us out because they “closed.” Personally, I think they were just too lazy to let us in, but whatever. I confessed to David that I had not gone grocery shopping in weeks, so he took me out to dinner at the Westfield mall. Shake Shack NEVER fails, so we got some food from there! It was really nice being able to talk with him about his favorite memories with the Alpha Mu class. I was so happy that conversation flowed so easily with him, as if we had known each other for a long time! After our dinner, we went on a hunt for a boba shop, but all of them closed. Before 8:00! SO EARLY! SO RUDE! Why was everywhere closing on us all day… Afterwards, David dropped me back off at my apartment. I was sad to leave, but knowing that this was my big, and always will be my big, really filled my heart with so much joy. I know all the other bigs are cool, but I absolutely love David and will defend that he’s the coolest to my GRAVE. It genuinely takes a lot for me to get comfortable with a person and let my inner personality out, but I felt like I could around him. It was the best feeling in the world. If you’re reading this David, thank you for everything!!! See you so soon!!! <3 Our Photo drive.google.com/file/d/1gOjoJSyt637D2Xmch37b3uG6_SdCJ5jx/view?usp=sharing

Weekend Journal #2: drive.google.com/file/d/19q0PQ1rczKD1aAvxs4O03fjtlzIslXh1/view?usp=sharingIt was so so nice to hang out with Jenn this weekend. We went out for coffee around 1 pm and it was great. We both had a lot to do today so we kept it brief, but it was honestly such a nice time because it turned out we had a lot in common with each other. It is crazy to me because even though we kind of knew each other when choosing each other as a big/little, there is only so much you can know about a person. It actually turned out that the way we approach things is very similar. One of the things we spoke about the way we approach emotions and being emotionally vulnerable with other people, and our reservations. It was really interesting because we actually see relationships in the same way as each other, too. It was a really great conversation and I definitely feel as if I know Jenn a lot better than I did before. I love how calm her approach is to situations, and it is definitely a characteristic that I admire. I also love how outgoing she is and her ability to just make friends and casual conversation with everyone, and this comfortability with people is also something that I am trying to work on. To me, it is clear that mentorship allows you to learn more about yourself, your values, and what you value in other people. I think it allows you get better sense of self, and overall, more of what you want from things and life as a whole. Listening to others, allows you gain a second-hand perspective on things, and perhaps even develop new perspectives that without mentorship, you wouldn’t have had the opportunity to see and develop. It can help you grow, and work through challenges that may arise in your path and shed light on situations. In addition to guidance, I think mentorship can motivate you to continue to grow, too. As nice as it is to talk about oneself, the ability to listen and internalize is equally or if not more important. Sometimes it is difficult for me to recognise the importance of a work/life balance. I tend to get caught up in things, and as soon as I have time to relax, it feels unnatural, and I look for more things to fill my life with. I have an unhealthy tendency to view things as all or nothing. However, I notice my mental wellbeing is best when I do make time to do things that have absolutely no ‘productive’ purpose. I notice when I make time to do things in advance, instead of continuously working, I am always more productive. Not only this, but I am also happier and more content, and am less likely to become bored and dissatisfied with the actual work I am doing. As much as I hope to love my career, I am not sure if it should be my entire life. It is sometimes strange to think that everything we do and every career we may enter is ‘artificial’. I sometimes wonder what my purpose is, other than to just exist. If it is to just exist, I would rather look back on things and see that I have made the most of my time, filling my life with not only things for a ‘productive’ purpose (although, of course there are monetary constraints, and this is a rather privileged viewpoint). I would hope to look back on things and appreciate small moments of bliss and nothingness. Moments of no true purpose other than to just appreciate the company of others and the things you love.

Weekend Journal #2. docs.google.com/document/d/1PhbpXlTdDgnNpcJk8lVtawbbx7pOMdjYjb4aBrrWyWM/edit?usp=sharing 4/25 I had so much fun hanging out with Mihir over Zoom. As always there was so much we talked about such as our favorite shows and movies. There were some interesting suggestions that I actually do wanna start watching soon such as Lupin, and Black Mirror, which are said to be very amazing and thought-provoking shows. We each keep referring to different suggestions to each other and also give our analysis of the shows we recently watched such as The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and Wandavision. We both love our fair share of comic book movies so it was nice to talk about something I truly love. Also our discussion about shoes is amazing considering we’re both college students just trying to get some nice shoes in the cheapest way and I think I might do some of the things Mihir does to save money on shoes. He was talking to me about this certain spot in LA that has a lot of sneaker shops and also about this store nearby Westwood that helps clean and restore shoes which I can’t wait to check out. Honestly Mihir is the best mentor I could have asked for because it is sometimes hard to find people to discuss things like Marvel, video games, and anything pop culture so to actually have someone like that as my Big is honestly the best. I honestly really feel like I could be myself around him without too much criticism. I’d always respect Mihir not only for his wisdom but for also being super reliable as well. Kinda sucks that Mihir wasn’t able to bring some of his gaming systems because I really wanted to play Warzone with him for a bit, but we were able to make it work by playing Call of Duty on our phones. I’ll admit I was doing trash for the first few games but then once I started remembering how to play, me and Mihir started getting dubs like crazy. Mihir got frustrated a bit and so was I sometimes but damn was it nice to get a win every now and then. After playing for a long time, we started talking about upcoming games that we wanted to play and I told him about the new demo for Resident Evil Village. It’s a horror game that me and Mihir have been excited about for a while even though we both admit that we both are probably going to be too scared to play it. However, the story for this game is supposed to be amazing and it is also going to look phenomenal, graphics wise so I hope that we can both man up soon and play it over the summer. I loved how when it comes to music, we both share similar tastes with Rap music but also agree there are many rappers that are underrated or not given enough attention to how amazing their music is or how talented they are. Examples of these artists include JID, Vince Staples, and Earthgang. I was also able to teach Mihir some tricks when it comes to holding down your liquor. As someone who loves tequila, I also recommended which tequilas to go for and which tequilas to avoid such as going for Centenario or Jimador for best valued tequila, going for Patron to get messed up the fastest and going for Don Julio or Corralejo for best quality tequila. I wanted to make sure Mihir is smart when he’s drinking and what stuff he should go for and what stuff he should really watch out for. I think the highlight of the day was when he offered to help me if I ever visited Westwood, it really goes to show what an amazing human being Mihir is and I honestly can’t wait to hangout with him in person and go sneaker shopping for some amazing finds in LA.

Weekend Journal #2: drive.google.com/file/d/1LrrEC1EWwbgcAsVOdDNe8dwrGMguzDkU/view?usp=sharingIt was really fun to spend time with Matthew. Even though I couldn’t meet with him in person since he isn’t in Westwood, I was still able to have really good quality time with him over facetime. We called for a couple of hours and talked about so many different things and I feel like I know him even better now. The first area that we talked about was my feelings on the pledge process so far. I was able to open up to him about times when I was stressed out, overwhelmed, and felt proud of myself. He reassured me about many things and gave me a lot of advice on how to be successful and manage my time well. I talked about almost every part of the pledge process so far with him and he also recounted a lot of his own pledge process. It was interesting to be able to compare how different it is since the Alpha Xi pledge class process is over zoom. He explained a lot of the Tub Tub’s history and I loved hearing about his big and little dynamic. He also explained what a big usually does and we decided that next year when he’s in Westwood, he’s going to make up for all of the missed meals right now which I’m really looking forward to. Other than that, we talked about other things like our music taste. It was funny because he wanted me to guess who his top Spotify artist was and I guess that it was Keshi on my first try. We share a lot in common with our music taste since I like Keshi as well. We also talked about my love for astrology and I tried to explain certain concepts like your “big three” to him. I also found that we both had a phase where we were really into BTS and we talked about how we wanted to go to their concert that was supposed to happen. I was able to learn a lot from Matthew during this time. Outside of more personal things we talked about that would apply like relationships, he gave me lots of advice on the pledge process. I learned that while aftermaths are meant to be taken seriously, I should also view that as great opportunities to improve myself and show growth to the active members. Additionally, I learned that your pledge brothers are meant to be your support system throughout the entire process and we should always be working to help one another. The value of mentorship was very apparent from the time we spent together. Matthew explained a lot of what a big provides for their little whether it be emotional support or a helping hand. Mentorship is amazing because it provides someone so many different ways to mature and immerse themselves in a supportive environment. The mentor is able to pass down their knowledge, while the mentee’s confidence and education are benefitted. Regarding maintaining a balance between work and life, it’s always important to ensure that your mental health is not deteriorating and that you have time for other aspects of your life such as friends and hobbies. Working your entire life without breaks only causes unhappiness. There is always more to life than work and everyone should be able to take some time to themselves to simply just enjoy the things around them and in their life. Going through the pledging process so far has allowed me to see the value of mentorship and I am learning how to create a balance between all of the different obligations in my life.

Weekend Journal #2: drive.google.com/drive/folders/10I6--_MEXSCtTWmPzFPEz4_n5KaglKjY?usp=sharingI have been looking forward to my Big Little Date with Mira all week and it definitely exceeded all expectations. We did not have set plans on what we were going to do, so we impulsively headed to Santa Monica to hunt down frozen yogurt. I’ve been craving frozen yogurt lately so this was honestly the perfect snack. We ate in the car and talked a lot about how I’ve been feeling about the pledging process, what we did this week, and more Big Little Date plans. Mira decided to take me to one of her favorite places, a viewpoint in Malibu. I had never been to Malibu, so I was super excited for the drive. It was a beautiful day out and the view was also gorgeous, we drove past a few beaches and up a windy road through the mountains to her viewpoint. Mira played me some of her favorite songs and I loved everything she played me, especially because her music taste is similar to mine. One of the parts I love most about my relationship Mira is being able to talk very freely about the mental space I am in. Throughout the drive, we talked a lot about past friendships, how she’s found a community in Kappa Alpha Pi, and the stress of the pledging process. When we reached the viewpoint, it was honestly stunning, it was very peaceful and we could see all of the mountains around us. We took some photos and I got to be in her One Second a Day clip for today which I am excited to see when she puts it together at the end of the year. We listened to Frank Ocean and just looked at the view for thirty minutes. I really enjoyed how simple it was, that there was nothing to do at this viewpoint but admire everything around us and talk to each other. I also really appreciated that Mira took me to this viewpoint because she told me that it is one of her favorite places and where she likes to go when she needs a quick getaway and some peace. It meant a lot that she was able to share it with me and even more that she said she was glad she brought me there. Mira and I both love driving, especially driving with our friends because it provides such a comfortable environment to talk about anything. We also talked about how we have had some of the best bonding experiences and memories with our best friends while driving. For me, this experience felt very similar; I feel like I was able to learn so much more about her and was able to share a lot of my personal experiences with her. I loved every minute of our date, it was definitely a much-needed and enjoyable break from all of the stress and workload of pledging and schoolwork. Being with my big helps remind me of why I really want to be a part of Kappa Alpha Pi, the corny yet so real idea of brotherhood in the fraternity. Also, talking with her about her experiences in Kappa Alpha Pi makes me want to cross that much more so I can have those same experiences and friendships. To me, mentorship is being able to pass down the knowledge and experiences you have had in order to give others perspective. Mira has without a doubt served as a mentor for me within the few weeks that we have known each other; she always enables me to put my stress and anxieties about pledging into perspective. She has served as a mentor not only in terms of providing advice about Kappa Alpha Pi, but regarding issues of relationships, mental health, and legitimately anything that is on my mind. I value her advice and mentorship immensely and know that I will without a doubt continue to bother her whenever I get stressed. Going on our date today also emphasized the importance of maintaining a work-life balance. The past two weeks have been very stressful and it has been hard to make time for my friends and family lately. But after spending time with Mira, I found that I was able to work more efficiently and not feel as dragged down by it all. I can tell that although it may appear I do not have time to take a moment for myself and spend time with others, I should, as it gives me something to look forward to and be happy about. Overall, I had the best day with Mira, it was definitely the highlight of my week. I can’t wait to see what other activities we do over the next few weeks and am already so happy to have made such an amazing friend of my big.

Weekend Journal #3: drive.google.com/file/d/1HTUB-vOhQYdcLAhXvo-glhfXXcbzuZKF/view?usp=sharingAlpha Xi as cupcake flavors: I decided that every member of the Alpha Xi pledge class can be assigned as a cupcake flavor because while we are all very different, every member is ever so sweet and a nice treat after a long day of school work! Starting off with Hanna as a pina colada cupcake. Hanna is so much fun to be around and her personality resembles that of a warm summer beach day. Similar to the pina colada cupcake, her personality has many layers. Coconut symbolizes her caring and soft side and the pineapple with the cherry on top resembles her sweet, bold, and fun nature. Aya is the black forest cupcake. Aya has a rich personality similar to that of the notorious rich black forest cake. She is filled with so much kindness and love to give- shown through the cherries that fill the black forest cupcake. The whipped cream frosting is the best of all representing Aya’s beautiful personality that is very welcoming and nurturing. Emmy is the honey bee cupcake. No cupcake is more fitting because Emmy is as sweet as honey but fierce as a bee. I have never had a dull moment with Emmy and everyone knows I truly admire her. She is a great leader and an even better friend. Her sweet yet bold personality is the best thing about her and we are all lucky to have such a sweet member in our pledge class. Nathan is the maple bacon cupcake… yes because he is Canadian. Okay, but that is not the only reason. Nathan really surprises everyone. Not only with his height but also his personality which can be very hilarious out of nowhere. He makes everyone laugh but also keeps us all on track. I mostly chose this cupcake because of the maple syrup but Nathan is very observant and keeps an eye out for all of us. Elaine is the sundae cupcake. Whenever Elaine shares a story, she makes everyone laugh so hard and is just a joy to be around. Not sure why but sundaes give me the same energy as Hello Kitty- just very sweet and fun. Also, the sundae cupcake is beautifully decorated and Elaine always looks stunning so it was only fitting. Alexis is the margarita cupcake! Alexis has a very fun, outgoing, and energetic personality. Yet, at the same time, he is very humble and observant to those around him. The margarita cupcake captures the energy Alexis brings to the group while also showing the sweet side that he has with his pledge brothers and his own brother at home. Next is Kylie as the chocolate-dipped strawberry cupcake. When I think of Kylie the first word that comes to mind is sweet. Her voice and personality are absolutely wonderful. I chose the chocolate cake because Kylie also has a bold nature along with the pretty and sweet strawberry buttercream. Eric is the dirt cupcake. He is very playful, funny, and caring to all the members of our pledge class. Whenever Eric is around no one leaves the call without laughing at least once. The dirt cupcake is a favorite at the Shop and it is fair to say that all who are lucky enough to meet Eric never forget him. Zz is the twist and stout cupcake. Just like the chocolate Guinness cake, Zz has a bold and rich personality. She is extremely determined and listens to everyone while always contributing the best ideas. The caramel buttercream and chocolate dipped pretzel represent Zz’s sweet and surprising nature that we all cannot get enough of. She is comfort mixed with pizzazz and we would not be the same without her. Lastly, I am the hot cocoa cupcake. I think I have a warm personality and this cupcake embodies that. I also just love staying up late with my pledge brothers and hot cocoa is always a nice late-night drink. I chose this cupcake for myself because it brings me great happiness just like my pledge brothers do. 10 cupcakes-- the best $26.80 you will ever spend at Sublime Cupcakes!

Weekend Journal #3:
The system I have selected to represent my pledge class is different coffee orders. Working as a barista, I was able to notice what types of people gravitate towards specific drinks so I am hoping to determine either what drink I believe they would order and why or what drink represents their personality.
For Elaine, she would order an iced vanilla latte. This is one of my go-to drinks so I feel like it represents who Elaine is to me, someone I can always turn to when I need to vent about the pledging process, drowning in schoolwork, or literally anything. Also, iced vanilla lattes are always a reliable order and Elaine never fails to be my support system when I need it.
Nathan only gets coffee from Dunkin’ Donuts and I am assuming he gets a fairly sweet coffee like their mochas or a caramel macchiato. Customers who ordered very sweet drinks tended to be very energetic and children at heart which is very fitting for Nathan. He never fails to put a smile on my face with his optimism and enthusiasm so this order is perfect for him.
Zz would order a chai latte which I feel very much fits with her personality. The people I saw order chai lattes were always very easy to talk to, laid back and patient with the baristas. In the time that I have known Zz, she has always been someone I felt I could easily open up to and who I could trust which I believe fits this particular order. Also on a side note, people who ordered chai lattes always tipped well and I feel like Zz is the person to never leave a restaurant without tipping.
Kylie would definitely order a peppermint mocha, regardless of what time of year it is. This drink is perfect for those who have big sweet tooths and who love Christmastime all year round. This suits Kylie because she is one of the sweetest people I know and I feel like she loves the joy associated with Christmas.
Eric would get a green tea lemonade because he is peculiar and does not enjoy coffee. However, he is a caffeine fiend and green tea is always a great caffeine boost. This drink also represents him because this drink is a balance of the bitter tea and sweet lemonade. Eric never fails to humble me with his hilarious insults and snide comments but nonetheless he is a very kind and caring individual who always makes me laugh.
Vidya would order a matcha latte because based on my experience, the customers who order matcha lattes are always very down to earth and effortlessly kind. Throughout the pledging process, Vidya has been an incredible support for every single one of us, always checking in on our mental health and stress levels.
Emmy would order an iced oat milk cappuccino. Right off the bat, it is clear to me that Emmy would only drink substitute milks being an Environmental Science major. Also, customers who order cappuccinos love caffeine boosts and are always pushing themselves and others to go the extra mile. Emmy puts in so much work towards our philanthropy, pledging, and our brotherhood. Her dedication pushes me to work harder and I admire her work ethic and just her in general immensely.
For Alexis, I feel like he would get a black coffee with a splash of milk. This drink reminds me of the dads who would come in to get a coffee with their kids in tow; they would get their kids hot chocolate and buy a large coffee for themselves. Alexis, as the oldest in our pledge class and our president, definitely feels like the dad of our pledge class. He always keeps us going with motivational messages and keeps us in check when we need it.
Aya would order a cold brew with oat milk and probably a pump of vanilla. Customers who ordered cold brews would always be very chill and positive, they also didn’t need all of the caffeine in espresso because they already were very energetic. Aya simply radiates positive energy and is always very uplifting and she very much reminds me of the people who would order this drink.
For me, my go-to order is an iced caramel macchiato. I feel like this represents me because it is a balance of bitterness and sweetness which is representative of my personality; I am definitely not positive all of the time and am often pessimistic but I have my moments.

Weekend Journal #3 (5/2):
I decided to represent my pledge class as Studio Ghibli movies. These movies have such a special place in my heart, and so do each of the Alpha Xi’s.
Vidya reminds me of Ponyo. Ponyo is a film about a fish transforming into a human girl, and becoming best friends with a boy. It is the sweetest movie about friendship and overcoming milestone obstacles with one another, and it has the best graphics! Vidya reminds me of this movie because our friendship together is blossoming, and she makes me feel like a kid again. I feel so light and airy around her, and everything feels so fun with her. She is so amazing, and I cannot wait to see what she teaches me about life.
Zz reminds me of Princess Mononoke. The movie is about a strong girl that is a part of the animal kingdom, and she is very in touch with nature. She is the most badass character out of all the Studio Ghibli leads, and has many sides to her that she slowly uncovers. I am so inspired by Zz every day, and she is the most courageous and unique human being. I want to get to know her as much as I can, because I know she has so many layers to her extraordinary personality.
Elaine reminds me of The Cat Returns. This is one of my FAVORITE Studio Ghibli movies! It is about a girl trying to escape a cat kingdom and return to her life as a school girl. Elaine reminds me of this movie because every time I’m with her, I always find myself going on fun adventures. She reminds me of the sweet parts of life that are worth valuing and forever remembering. Maybe we’ll never need to escape a cat kingdom, right—but she teaches me to overcome my boundaries and makes me feel so alive.
Hanna represents Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Nausicaa is also in touch with nature, but she is very gentle and kind to everything around her. She solves everything through empathy, peace, and affection. Hanna has been so wonderful to me every time I see her, but it’s easy to tell she has a fiery side to her that will stand up for what she believes in. I admire her personality and confidence, and want to be just like that!
Emmy reminds me of Howl’s Moving Castle. The movie is about a woman who suddenly becomes very old, and needs all the mystical help she can get to become young again. It’s the most elegant movie about the passage of life, and the love you find in between. Emmy has a quintessential aura to this movie—she is eloquent, stunning, funny, and all the elements that makes a good film, a good film. This is one of Studio Ghibli’s most famous movies, as Emmy is the most memorable friend to always cherish. She is loved so widely, and always will be.
Alexis reminds me of Ocean Waves. Compared to the other movies Studio Ghibli has produced, Ocean Waves is directed towards an older audience about the trials and tribulations of relationships. I really look up to Alexis, and feel like he gives really good affirmations and advice about life. He is a deep, wise human being. I really would love to get to know him further, and have interesting conversations with him. Meeting somebody like Alexis is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Kylie reminds me a lot of Kiki’s Delivery Service! Just like Kylie, the main character is confident, bubbly, and smart. This is also a super popular Ghibli movie because of how attached you get to the main character, and I find myself so excited to when I can next see Kylie! I see a lot of similarities between the two, especially with how lovable they are.
Eric reminds me a lot of Spirited Away. Spirited Away is about this young girl discovering a whole new world she has never seen before, and trying to find her way back to her family. I feel like this applies to Eric, because he is like nobody I have ever met before. He is incredibly funny, and makes me feel so happy! I think he is so great at making everyone feel like they’ve been best friends for years.
Nathan reminds me of Porco Rosso. The main character is amazing at flying planes, and often tries saving other people over himself. I think Nathan is a very selfless guy, who helps his pledge brothers out all the time. I really admire this quality about him, and he is absolutely essential in keeping the Xi’s bond together. I appreciate his presence so much!
Lastly, I identify a lot with Aya and the Witch. Pretty self-explanatory, maybe.

Weekend Journal #3 5/02: Alpha Xis as Pokémon
One of my favorite video game franchises is Pokémon. My Nintendo DS was my first console and Pokémon Platinum holds a special place in my heart as it was the first game I completed. I will be classifying each of my fellow pledge brothers as a Pokémon type and trainer.
Alexis was a bit difficult to pin down regarding which type, but I decided on the dark type. Even though Alexis has been a very kind man, I could see him being the leader of an evil corporation or the antagonist of a series. His partner Pokémon would probably be Absol or Umbreon. Also, I have noticed that Alexis almost always wears his black button-up shirt and black tie at our pledge meetings, so this sleek look would be the perfect pairing for his dark type attire.
The normal type goes to Aya, I initially had her as a grass type, but she informed me that she cannot keep a plant alive, so I did not think that match would go over well. The Pokémon that would accompany Aya would be Eevee. I think she would make a good gym leader or friend at the start of one’s quest, similar to other normal type gym leaders, as she has a nurturing essence about her.
Our resident eccentric British brother, Emmy, gets the electric type. In some cases, you can find electric type Pokémon on farms or prairies, which I believe would be up her alley. These Pokémon include Mareep, Dedenne, and Yamper. This type of Pokémon can be considered goofballs and despite how serious Emmy can be, she is known to crack a smile fairly easily and lighten the mood.
Per request, Elaine is the water type. This is mainly over her infatuation with Piplup, and this goes well, as many other first-stage water type Pokémon also have this cute nature about them (which equates to her obsession with Hello Kitty). Elaine would act as though she is the toughest trainer in the land and then complain after you beat her for sure.
Eric gets the fire type and the Pokémon Magmortar. Partially, this is due to me thinking he was a ginger and how it reminded me of the Gym Leader Flint. Other attributes that create this pairing are that he is a bit hotheaded and fiery, hence making the fire type a good match. Also, many fire type attacks can inflict the status burn, which also correlates to how he can sometimes roast his fellow pledge brothers.
Our resident tarot card reader and astrology expert Hanna gets the psychic type. This would be her type as a lot of Pokémon trainers who specialize in psychic types can be seen as intimidating, which is how I initially perceived Hanna. However, she is actually very approachable, some additional characteristics are intelligence and her mind seems fairly sturdy, as not much gets to her personally.
Kylie was another person who was difficult to determine as a singular type, but I decided on flying for her. I think her partner Pokémon would be Drifloon, as it is cute and petite just like her. Flying types are also known to be very liberated and live freely, and I feel like there is not much that can hold Kylie down, especially with her cheerful persona.
Vidya radiates innocence and elegance so I believe the fairy type would suit her. Her partner Pokémon would either be Ribombee or Sylveon. Fairy type Pokémon are notoriously underestimated for their abilities due to their more feminine and fragile look, but they can seriously pack a punch and I think that also describes Vidya. Her sweet nature and organization make her an asset on your team, but paired with her intellect you know when things come down to it she is very reliable to get the job done.
To preface, this may sound like an insult, but I will try to do the best I can to format it in a way that is a compliment. But I think Zz would be a bug type Pokémon trainer. Something about her reminds me of the bug catchers in the main series games, probably on how resilient they both are, not that I could see her slinging around a giant net in hopes of catching a Vivillon or Butterfree. I also think Zz is a very dynamic person, which is exhibited in the bug type as they may start out as a larva, but evolve into something beautiful (or depending on the case, fearsome).
I have given this a lot of thought, which gym leader would I be if I was in a Pokémon game, as I am borderline obsessed with the series. I think my main inspiration would be Candice of generation 4 (Pokémon Platinum–– my favorite game), and I would be an ice type. I think I embody both aspects of being relatively chill and go with the flow, but also fierce as ice types can manipulate the weather to be freezing cold. My complete team would probably be: Glaceon, Mamoswine, Froslass, Lapras, Aurorus, and Weavile.

Weekend Journal #3
Naturally, since I love milk tea, I will be categorizing the Alpha Xis as milk tea flavors/boba drinks:
First we have our President Alexis. Alexis would be a green mojito, which is a Jasmine green tea with mint and key lime. I immediately thought of Alexis for this drink because the drink is pretty unique, and I think Alexis has a very cool and unique personality. The hint of lime represents how Alexis always adds some flavor to the group and enjoys having a good time. The mojito also represents how he is the oldest pledge member and is like the dad of the group.
Elaine would be the brown sugar milk tea because she is a baddie who is always here for the TEA. This drink is fun and extravagant with the pretty syrup on the side of the cup, just like Elaine’s amazing style and gorgeous lashes. She is so cool and adventurous, and always has the energy to have a good time, like how the sugar in this drink will keep you on your toes. She is also just a super sweet and caring person, just like how this drink is very sweet.
Nathan reminds me of a strawberry smoothie with lychee jelly. This is the drink that a lot of kids order, and I feel like Nathan is so nice and innocent like a kid. However, the lychee jelly represents the spice he brings to the group, with his quick wit and roasts. He will say the funniest things out of nowhere that can make all of us laugh.
Hanna would be the coffee milk tea. Our resident barista, Hanna knows all things coffee. The coffee milk tea is great as it provides the caffeine from coffee, but is also rich and sweet. Hanna is the perfect balance of strong-willed and hardworking, but also being relaxed and having fun. She is also the kindest and most comforting presence. She will always take care of you and be there for you!
Eric would be a mango green tea with rainbow jelly, 150% sugar. Eric is just the most fun and cheerful person to be around. Everyone likes fruit tea because it is so refreshing and yummy, and kind of tastes like juice. This is just like Eric’s refreshing presence, who can always cheer you up if you are having a bad day. I made sure to put 150% sugar because Eric is always full of energy and has a smile on his face. Fruit tea is sweet, but not overwhelmingly so, just like how Eric is a genuinely kind friend, but will also bully you if you are close with him (in a good way).
Emmy would have to be the matcha milk tea. Our environmental science major queen, we know she loves the Earth and nature. Like matcha, Emmy just has a calm and kind presence always, as well as the biggest heart. Maybe it is her British accent, but she always speaks so eloquently and is so put together. I love matcha and I love Emmy!
Vidya would be a jasmine milk tea because this is a classic that everyone likes, with a hint of floral flavor. The floral reminds me of how delicate, kind, and caring Vidya is, and she is just a calm and comforting presence to be around. She is so pretty and sweet, just like a flower. I need her kind presence in Westwood!
Aya would be the Thai milk tea. The bold color of this drink represents how Aya is a powerful baddie. This drink is the perfect balance of sweet, rich, and creamy, representing Aya’s perfectly balanced personality. She is also the sweetest and most caring human that we all love. Who doesn’t like Thai tea?
Zz is a classic black milk tea. This is the leader of all milk teas, representing Zz’s queen energy. This drink is perfectly balanced and reminds me of Zz’s laid-back personality. When I am unsure on what to get, I know that no boba place can mess up a black milk tea, just like I know I can trust Zz with anything. She is very level-headed, kind, and calm, like this classic drink. You know you can always count on a black milk tea to be good.
Kylie (me) is taro milk tea because I am kind of basic but I try to be sweet and bubbly. The pop of color represents my favorite color and how I like to see the bright side of things.

Weekend Journal #3 5/2/21
So for this weekend journal, the system I wanted in place is rap songs to represent each of my pledge siblings. Music is one of the most nurturing and powerful things ever created by Humanity. Rap music is my specialty and it has gotten me through some of the toughest times in my life, just like how many of my p-bros have helped me get through this challenging quarter as well.
Starting off with ZZ, I choosed the song “I DON”T FUCK WITH YOU” by Big Sean. ZZ is one of the toughest people I have ever gotten to meet. She is a natural leader who will not let anyone stand in her way. This song is for the people who are too blind to see the greatness in her. ZZ, like this song, is not only the perfect person to let yourself be vulnerable but also a great person to have fun with, again like the song.
Next up we got Nathan which for him I chose the song “Energy” by Drake. Drake being Canadian wasn’t the only reason why I picked a song from him but I also see this relentlessness from Nathan that I also feel from Drake. Nathan is always trying to be on top of his things and never ceases to impress me. The song also shows Nathan's amazing and contagious spirit and energy that he brings to every Zoom meeting.
For Hanna, I chose the song “You Know How We Do It” by Ice Cube. Not only is it the perfect stoner song but I always play this song when I’m driving in my car in the early day. The song always screams chill and relaxing, which is how I see Hanna. She is the friend you’d want to chill, share a blunt with, and drive around in your car for hours just vibing.
For Aya, I chose the song "Love Yourz" by J.Cole. This song has a special place in my heart. Everytime I hear it, it takes me back to those tough times that all I had was just this song to bring a little light in my life. That’s how I feel about Aya in the pledge class. She has been the little light we need in our tough times. She is so humble and she is a good reminder to us all that there is always light in the tunnel.
For Vidya I chose the song “Tap In” by Saweetie. I think Vidya is both very sweet but also sassy when she needs to be. She has that BOSS vibes all the time, especially when she tries to keep everybody in check. I feel like the song speaks to her in the sense that she is the one that will go get what she wants because she knows she will do everything she can to get it.
For Kylie, I chose “Life’s a Mess II” by Juice WRLD. Kylie is one of those people that just get the job done no matter what. I can feel the love she has not only for us but her significant other as well. I have that same feeling with my own significant other. Everytime I listen to that song, I just remember how lucky I am to have my p-bros. Kylie is a good reminder why I chose this fraternity and it really is the people.
For Emmy, I chose the song “Sunflower” by Swae Lee. This song also is very special to me since it is in one of my favorite movies of all time. When I listen to it, I feel the humanity within myself. Emmy is one person that reminds everybody of the humanity they still have inside. She brings so much light to our zoom meetings just like a sunflower.
For Elaine, I chose “Can’t Tell me Nothing” by Kanye West. It is true what they say about Chicago people, they are some of the toughest people you will ever come across and that is how I feel about Elaine. If strong and fearless needed a new definition, I would say it's Elaine. Not only does the song show her chicago roots with Yeezus himself but it exemplifies the badass attitude that is Elaine.
For Eric, I chose “SICKO MODE” by Travis Scott. Not only did I choose it because recently he was sick but like this song, there is never not a good time when Eric is around. He is legit the life of the party with his energy, humor and contagious fun vibes. This song always hypes me up like crazy just how Eric always hypes everybody up and is such a motivation to just enjoy life and have fun.
As for me, my song will be “Deja Vu” by J.Cole. and “Nuthin but a G Thang” by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. Every word in the first song represents my background but also my aspirations while the second song represents what I represent as someone who just likes to chill and vibe whenever I can.
Together, we make a great playlist meant for the real ones out there. Not only are we a good playlist as amazing songs but a good team as amazing people.

I have decided to assign each of my pledge brothers to a Riverdale character as I feel as if everyone has a shared bond based upon the absolute absurdity of the show. Although not perfect, I definitely think each pledge member has some characteristics that are reflected in the iconic characters of Riverdale.
Nathan is Betty. Nathan, like Betty, is a pseudo-girl boss. I respect Nathan as I feel like he will always be upfront like Betty and be able to speak his mind. More than just a Betty blonde, he seems to have a determination like no other and is able to make any necessary steps to achieve his goals.
Eric is Jughead. Jughead is pretty laid-back, and I feel like Eric is too. I could definitely see Eric sitting back and just observing the world, whilst writing an ‘epic’ tale. Like Jughead, Eric can also be eccentric and without a doubt has the same blunt, sarcastic sense of humor. Always entertaining.
Aya is Veronica. Veronica speaks up when she believes something is not right and is able to stand her ground. I definitely see her as a very loyal character, just as I see Aya – loyal, kind, and putting her morals first. Like Veronica, I can see Aya always being there for anyone in need of help and showering all those around with love.
Elaine is Cheryl. Just like Cheryl, Elaine is a badass. Elaine gives off a confident aura, and like Cheryl, Elaine’s sick outfits reflect this. She isn’t afraid of expressing who she truly is and her full personality, and I really admire this quality. Like Cheryl, I feel as if Elaine would be protective over those she cares about.
Hanna is Kevin. Even though Kevin is an underrated character, he is portrayed as kind, charismatic, and tough, just like Hanna. I also feel as if Hanna is well-spoken and confident in herself. She can come out with some cracking comments, but equally, I can imagine her giving the absolute best advice for any situation.
Kylie is Toni. Toni is portrayed as being sweet and immensely empathetic in Riverdale, and I could totally imagine Kylie being her. Like Toni, I also think of Kylie as being collected and level-headed in the face of challenges, and always having her friends’ (and pledge brother’s) backs and best interest at heart.
Vidya is Josie. She is an amazing singer, and I can’t imagine her ever hurting anyone. I also think like Josie, Vidya is very tough and is able to endure difficult situations and see the light in everything. Throughout Riverdale, Josie blossoms to become confident in herself and her need for the approval of others lessens. Over the short period of knowing Vidya, I have been able to see her blossom into the baddie she truly is.
Alexis is Fred Andrews. As the oldest and the president of the pledge class, Alexis couldn’t be anyone else besides Fred Andrews. Like Fred Andrew, Alexis can crack a good joke, but is also a hard worker and is always considerate of others and their well-being. A very humble character.
Zz is the Gargoyle King. I feel like Zz could rally up a crowd of followers, for the right or wrong reasons. She is a natural-born leader who could simultaneously be the president of the United States and a secret board-game cult leader. With her studies in psychology, I know she could convince me to join. Truly witty, a gargoyle king.
I am Archie Andrews. I feel as if I embody the chaoticness and sometimes unpredictability of Archie Andrews (and to be honest KJ Apa). Enough said.

I have decided to represent my fellow Alpha Xi’s as the many, many different styles of Chia Pets. Chia Pets hold absolutely no significance to me, as I have never owned one. However, many of my friends have, so it makes sense that I will be assigning Chia Pets to my friends rather than owning one myself. Alexis: www.chia.com/collections/star-wars/products/yoda-star-wars-chia-petI think Alexis is best represented by the Yoda Chia Pet. This is because Yoda is a very old and very wise figure. I know Alexis is not that old, but I feel like he represents maturity in all of us. He is a guiding presence in our pledge class, and I know we can all rely on him for love and support. Aya: www.chia.com/collections/chia-pet-collection/products/chia-puppyI think Aya is best represented by the Chia puppy. The Chia puppy is absolutely ADORABLE and I am sure that I would never leave a Chia puppy experience unsatisfied. This is the same way I feel with Aya. Every conversation I have had with Aya has left me so fulfilled, and she is so cool (like a puppy)! Elaine: www.chia.com/collections/chia-pet-collection/products/pennywise-it-chia-petI think Elaine is best represented by the Pennywise Chia Pet. This is because (I’m not sure if this is correct in the lore) Pennywise knows everyone’s secrets in the movies, and generally knows everything about everyone. I feel the same about Elaine. Elaine could ruin people’s lives if she wanted to, she just actively chooses not to. Respect. Emmy: www.chia.com/collections/chia-pet-collection/products/bob-ross-chia-petI think Emmy is best represented by the Bob Ross Chia Pet. This is because Bob Ross is a calming presence. Everything about him screams zen, and he really just doesn’t want anything to go south. I feel like Emmy fits this description pretty well, plus I feel like she would be an excellent artist. Hanna: www.chia.com/collections/freedom-of-choice/products/bernie-sanders-chia-petI think Hanna is best represented by the Bernie Sanders Chia pet. This is not only because I believe Hanna supports what Bernie stands for, but I also think Hanna is unafraid to stand up for what she thinks is right. Hanna is also a very comforting presence and reminds me of the feeling I get from watching Bernie rallies. Kylie: www.chia.com/collections/chia-pet-collection/products/chia-unicornI think Kylie is best represented by the Chia unicorn. I believe this is the case because a unicorn is swift and majestic, but never afraid to get in a fight when it needs to. I saw this as very fitting for Kylie, because Kylie is sweet and approachable on the outside, but she can be as sharp as a knife on the inside. Don’t get in the way of a unicorn, and don’t get in the way of Kylie. Nathan: www.chia.com/collections/chia-pet-collection/products/chia-kitten I think Nathan is best represented by the Chia kitten. This is because Nathan is a resident cat boy of the Alpha Xi pledge class (his big even sent him a cat squishmellow). Therefore, I saw this cat as very fitting for Nathan. I was debating between this and the Star Wars chia pet because if Nathan grew up in the 80s he would definitely have multiple posters of R2D2 in his childhood bedroom. Vidya: drive.google.com/file/d/1APVDT5qF5vG50-S1Vo6bX7or63YbtUh8/view?usp=sharing I think Vidya is best represented by the Chia Pet emoji collection. This is because, although I do not think she frequents the emojis, she is the physical manifestation of all of them. I can perfectly imagine Vidya being expressive with her emotions through emojis, but I think the heart eyes chia emoji, the smiley chia emoji, and the tears of joy chia emoji fit her best. Zz: www.chia.com/collections/chia-pet-collection/products/rick-rick-morty-chia-petI think Zz is best represented by the Rick Chia Pet from Rick and Morty. I don’t know if Zz has ever seen the show, but I am highly confident that she would love it if she did watch it. The show is deep and complex (deeper than on appearance), which I feel fits Zz’s personality well. She is kind and approachable on the surface, and once you get to know her more, you find that she has a much deeper personality that only leaves you appreciating her more.
