Interview with Peter 4/22
Today, I had an interesting conversation with Peter. I asked him a lot about his film minor (as I had never met a film major before), but it turns out he actually has not taken a film class since last summer as hopes to take them in person. It was really interesting to hear about some of his favorite movies, particularly as he said he didn't like some 'indie' movies as much as of the other film students, and actually has an appreciation for cartoons such as Spongebob. I then asked him about the kind of law he wants to go into the future, and although he isn't entirely set on a particular path yet, he feels morally conflicted about entering Entertainment Law. This is definitely a fear that I have, particularly as I start to really think about what I want to do specifically in the future. I then learnt about some of his other interests such as golf which was cool too. It was nice to get to know him better.

Interview with Suzy 4/22
I had a really great conversation with Suzy today! We spoke about the intersection of her interests in environmental justice, psychology, and public affairs. Hearing about Suzy's environmental efforts was also really awesome, as it turns out she has been vegan and has pretty much just shopped second-hand for the past few years after her job at Plato's closet. It actually turned out we both absolutely love the beach, too (particularly the swimming part). I also asked her about her tips on Mock Trial and she gave really good advice on fake-it-til-you-make-it. She was explaining that it was only really this year that she got into Mock Trial, and she was saying there is no way you can memorize all of the rules at first, so if you can state things with assertiveness, you are more likely to succeed and be believable. We talked about everyday examples of this too, and it was interesting because it is definitely something that I have noticed, at least with my friends. We were both talking about how we are trying to be more assertive and to limit second-guessing. I really enjoyed speaking with Suzy.

4/22 Interview with Hannah
It was really awesome to speak with Hannah today! We both got to know each other a bit better and it turned out we had a bunch in common! We talked about San Diego and I asked her a bit about the beaches down there. We then spoke about astrology for a while which was really fun as it turned out we were both leos. We spoke about all of our other interactions with other star signs and who we tended to get along best with, and it was pretty interesting to see the similarities. The crazy part was that we both had a set of Gemini parents. We then spoke about the random sights whilst running around Westwood and all the super nice houses you see in the surrounding neighbourhoods. I then recommended the run to the Playboy Mansion and it was funny because she had literally just beforehand been listening to a podcast talking about the Playboy Mansion. It was so nice to talk to her and I hope we can talk again soon.

4/25 Interview with Mihir
It was so great to get to know Mihir better. We spoke a lot about our experiences over the past year and talked about first year. It was interesting because like me, Mihir made a lot of his friends from his floor when he first came to UCLA. I also found out that until recently, he had actually been living in Texas with his family. We also spoke about the different good food places around Westwood and in Los Angeles in general, and that until this year, he hadn't really tried a lot of food off of campus due to the meal plan. It's funny because we had actually heard and been to some of the same places because of Buzzfeed Worth-It videos. It was surprising to me that Mihir had only learnt about the $3 pizookie deal at BJ's last week!

4/25 Interview with Maxine
It was really nice to talk to Maxine today! We spoke a lot about different random things. For example, the general culture in Utah (as this is where Maxine is from), particularly at BYU, to marry super young. We spoke about brain-washing and pondered on to what extent we are indeed brain-washed, concluding it's part of the human experience. It also turns out Maxine is really good at learning languages (she has learnt French, Spanish, Latin etc. in the past really fast). She said that because of this, and the fact that people consider her racially ambiguous, her dad believes that she could make a great CIA agent. Apparently, it is not necessarily the number of languages you currently speak that makes you a great agent, but rather how easily you pick them up. Maxine was also speaking about her ancestry and how she thinks it would be really interesting to get a DNA test. Lastly, we spoke about her time in New Zealand as a rugby player, and how she shared one bathroom with 13 people (and all of the gross incidents that come with living with so many guys!).

4/26 Interview with Chloe
I loved talking to Chloe today! It was so nice to hear about her time with UCLA Radio, Mobile Clinic, and Sexperts. I am definitely very inspired by how passionate and involved Chloe is. I learnt that she wants to go into public policy, with a focus on supporting low-income families and individuals with housing insecurity, and trying to create a better net. I found out that although she wants to stay in Los Angeles for work, she would also totally be down for pursuing a master's in a city like New York! I also found out that we both love some of the same dark (and sometimes slightly sadistic) shows like Normal People and The End of the F**King World, and that both of us have a soft spot for Irish accents. Overall, I really enjoyed our conversation and I hope to speak to Chloe again soon!

4/27 Interview with Iris
It was so great to get to know Iris a bit better! We spoke about a lot of things, such as the differences between Chicago and Los Angeles, and what it was like to come to Los Angeles. I found out that although Iris likes LA for university, she hopes to eventually maybe work in a more fast-paced environment like New York. We also spoke about what sports we grew up doing, and it turns out that Iris is an avid skier and snowboarder (which is super cool!). We actually both grew up doing tennis as well and suffered minor sports injuries due to incorrect shoe sizes. Iris then told me about her COVID-19 conspiracy theory, and it turns out she has watched a bunch of different movies about bio-medical warfare, too! We both agreed that it would be really cool to be in a position of power in which you have access to all information, but at the same time, such a position would be very difficult as one would have to maintain constant secrecy. All in all, I enjoyed the interview with Iris.

4/28 Interview with David
I really enjoyed my conversation with David today. We spoke about a lot of different things, and actually, the conversation was useful because David told me a bit more about the general philanthropic efforts of Kappa Alpha Pi. I thought it was really cool that the theme for this quarter is surrounding environmentalism/climate change! I also asked David a bit about his time with UCLA UniCamp and UniCorps. I remember hearing about the organization a while back at the beginning of freshman year, and it was great to hear more about their efforts in giving kids access to nature and camp experiences who might have not had the opportunity otherwise. David spoke about how in UniCamp and UniCorps they all give each other new names, and how you may never actually know someone's 'real' name. David also recommended a class on development that sounds really cool, too. It was great to get to know David and his interests better.

4/29 Interview with Ranhita
Today I had the chance to chat with Ranhita! I loved this interview as I got to 'meet' Scooter. I learnt that Scooter has a highly specific taste in food, and prefers fast food above any dog food. I also learned that Ranhita binged watched Love Island with her partner. It's always super funny to me when people watch Love Island over here as I have such specific memories of sitting down every night with friends at 16 and watching the nightly episodes religiously. I also found out that when Ranhita was a freshman, she actually went into one of the LA Scientology buildings! She told me that she and her friends were put into a room to watch a video about how modern medicine is bad, and the only way to heal is with the mind. I have always had thoughts about what it would be like to waltz into a Scientology building but could never imagine actually doing it! I also found out Ranhita went on a super awesome trip to Cabo.

4/30 Interview with Taylor
It was so awesome to get to know Taylor better! It turns out we actually have a lot in common. It was really interesting to hear about her experience with Clean Consulting, as environmental consulting is a pathway that I am definitely interested in pursuing. However, she did say that she was slightly disappointed by the fact that the furniture company she is working with wishes to portray environmentalism as a marketing scheme, rather than out of genuine concern. I also learned that Taylor has actually visited the UK before, and I learned that she wants to visit again in the future! Taylor and I also spoke a lot about music and art. I learned that she loves Matisse, DalĂ, Frida Khalo and some modern, conceptual and performance artists. Her favorite style is surrealism. I also learnt that Taylor equates herself to 2014 tumblr, and likes 'male manipulator' movies such as Pulp Fiction! It's funny because we both like the extremes of city-life, and the idea of living in the middle of nowhere surrounded by fields. Overall, I really enjoyed our conversation.

5/1 Interview with Ricky
Today I spoke with Ricky and got to know him a bit better. I asked him a lot about his experiences moving around so much growing up, from China to Singapore to Canada to Germany, and then to the US. I learned that Ricky really loves to travel, and hopes to travel all over in the future. Some of the countries he wants to travel to include Brazil, Argentina, Nigeria, Eygpt, Thailand, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, and Australia (for various different reasons)! I also learned that he enjoys all cuisines, and actually likes some British food (including black pudding. Some of his best memories were actually drinking hot punch in Christmas markets in Germany when he lived there during middle school. He also said that recently he has been super busy as he was pledging a social fraternity, too, but has been able to get to know a bunch of different people since September. Overall, it was a nice conversation!

5/3 Interview with Caitlin
It was super cool to speak with Caitlin today. I had the opportunity to ask her about her plans for the next year with City Year in Boston. I learned that although she is pretty nervous about the snow, she is looking forward to taking full advantage of the rail system, and hopes to visit her friends up and down the coast, from New York to Washington DC. It sounds like a very cool program. This program and her experience with UniCamp have informed and continue to inform her career aspirations of working in family/child care law, which is interesting. I learned that she has been involved with UniCamp since sophomore year and that she absolutely loves it. Caitlin is considering working permanently this summer with UniCamp but has hesitations due to comprised wifi (as she will be working on law school applications during that period). I also learned that she was recruited for women's rowing in freshman year, and despite the benefits, she decided she wanted a different college experience. It was really nice to talk to someone older and who has graduated as she definitely has a unique perspective on college.

5/3 Interview with Ria
It was so great to speak with Ria. We spoke about all sorts, starting with her passion for baking. I learned Ria has an appreciation for simple bakes, and she talked me through one of her favorites: toffee/caramel cookies. They sounded absolutely delicious. I learned that she also likes all sorts of British television like the Great British Bake-Off, Sherlock, and Doctor Who. Her favorite doctor is the 12th. Ria also has an appreciation for cheesy rom-coms, particularly ones with better representation. We both agreed that To All The Boys I Loved Before took a severe dip when Lara Jean picked Noah Centineo over John Ambrose. I learned that both of us have a huge appreciation for green space and public transport in cities, too. I then asked her about her experience with Mock Trial in high school, and it was so lovely to hear how she feels as if her confidence, eloquence, and assertiveness have improved through participating in the activity. I always love hearing how people boost their confidence as I am always looking for ways to improve mine. I loved this interview.

5/4 Interview with Sophie
It was lovely to speak with Sophie today, and I feel as if I got to know her a lot better. It is interesting because both of us are actually French minors, but take very different paths and approaches to the minor itself. Sophie is very much more interested in learning about the structure of language, whereas I am more interested in the literature. I learned that Sophie is planning on visiting Berlin this August to see her partner which is super cool! I also learned that Sophie loves to do outdoor things, like me. She really enjoys everything to do with yarn, too and is currently making a beautiful hand-made sweater for her mom for mother's day. We then spoke about music for a bit, and it turns out we have some similarities in taste. A really great conversation!
